Way back in Rockland County I spent my allowance on a sugary bounty In a store called "Gerkens" about two miles away The whole damn journey would take a half day Because the trek was all uphill But it was yet more difficult still Because there was no road that went directly there And we'd cut through neighbors' yards like totally scared And the bastards would scream: Get out of my yard! Get out of my yard! Get out of my yard! Get out of my yard! Get out of my yard! All for a stupid baseball card Sometimes they got so crazy How angry they'd get would really amaze me And I only covered a mile of ground Then I'd stop in my tracks because I'd hear that sound Of a growling, big, black hound I didn't dare hide because I was already found And the dog would chase me the whole rest of the way That's why I still hate dogs today And the bastards would scream: Get out of my yard! Get out of my yard! Get out of my yard! Get out of my yard! Get out of my yard! All for a stupid baseball card

Life Stains 01:17
I will not answer the phone Because there is something about all the things I planned So I don't hear any tone Yeah could you just leave a message Please understand That I've changed I used to want to be noticed by you Life stains And no detergent could make them disappear I will not check my e-mail Because there is something about people lost in words I only see how they fail Some think they're making a point but I'm left disturbed Because I changed I used to want to be noticed by you Life stains And no detergent could make them disappear

Touch 02:24
I can't keep up with these letters I do not have a good memory It would be best to forget it And turn my friends into enemies I only have so much effort So I'll cut my losses Because it's always up to me Always up to me I can't help but feel guilty Doing nothing I will offend If I had a moment believe me I would stamp and I would send But I only have so much patience So for now you'll only get my Silent sympathy My silent sympathy I can't keep up with these letters I do not have a good memory It would be best to forget it And turn my friends into enemies

Battery Acid 02:27
Hope: the pastime of fools But I've been to school And I know how it feels You dope - you got it all wrong I've been here too long To deal with your squeals Life: it's draining too fast But we can't make it last This battery juice Knife inside of my heart Let's get a fresh start Here check out this noose...

Bluff 02:58
I love her hair beneath my chin As I hug her from behind I love the way her voice tickles my ear But time is short and times are tough I hold a pair and try to bluff But she's all I have And she's pretty much had enough And I wish we'd drive away Where the city doesn't drown the stars But I never owned a car And I want to write her songs But I always feel so fucking low And the words upset her so I love her laugh, she's so polite To encourage my dumb jokes I love it when she raises just one brow But I can feel the time is now I say we can make it work somehow But I'm past the point Past what her will will allow And I want to buy her clothes But I don't have no taste at all Or the money or the time And I need to let her know All the things that I feel inside But no paycheck, no house, no pride And I wish we'd drive away Where the city doesn't drown the stars But I never owned a car And I want to write her songs But I always feel so fucking low And the words upset her so

Chosen words are my mistakes I can't think of what's left to break A crescent moon? Another tune? There's too much for me to name There's too much for me to name There's too much for me to name Doesn't matter - it's all the same Dusty floors and countertops Wet the rags and squeeze the mops Another day, no other way There's too much that I don't know There's too much that I don't know There's too much that I don't know Doesn't matter - it's time to go...

Lentil Soup 01:44
Everybody look at that silly fool He just got out of his graduate school He thinks his degree will open many doors But really that paper means nothing to me Thanks to collapsing economy We're swimming in the same lentil soup We're feeding in the same chicken coop Look around fella at those you call slobs They're your competition for that job The pool's drying up - the dream is over now No use complaining There's no time to groan Figure out how to pay that student loan We're swimming in the same lentil soup We're feeding in the same chicken coop Now you should tell all your friends...

On the barren wall a crack of morning light And fluish pain from cooling rain that fell last night Scattered books and papers dying on my floor And the distant roar of Highway 24 I think I'll sleep some more... Sixty minutes pass and am I still in bed? My brain will tease with memories I wish to shed Catch a mental glimpse of what it's like to dream An ice cube in a stream I'm passive, withered, clean And I don't know who I am... But then I'm off again Sleeping...

Time Zone 02:12
After night The California sun Stretches for its day long run It slews across the sky Laughing as the pale skins fry And after work It's California time A scaffold breaks now lanes entwine But traffic doesn't care When cells they take you everywhere And after life The California ground It chews its dead chokes them down But there's nowhere left to go But I won't move because I'm so slow And I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I am so sorry...

SansAmp Song 03:32
My SansAmp's broken It's on the fritz Because a tiny spring From the on/off switch It's gone it's gone it's gone it's gone But the show it must go on... I checked inside it Unscrewed the back The spring came flying out And disappeared into the black It's gone it's gone it's gone it's gone But the show it must go on... Well it must be somewhere And it must be found I made everybody In this dive bar look around But it's gone it's gone it's gone it's gone But the show it must go on...

Dosed 03:30
In the air or in my beer It landed here inside my ear I feel an itch, begin to twitch I start to stray and pull away What's happening? Who put this thing inside of me? Inside of me? Darting eyes and breathing skies My head is fried and I can't hide I never felt foundations melt Is this the way my world will stay? What's happening? Who put this thing inside of me? Inside of me? Inside of me? Inside of me? Inside of me...

Two Things 00:42
Why don't you know what you're saying? You rant and you rant It seems you never make a point So why should I wait I don't have the time So wrap it up quick if you can I listen And I listen What am I missing? Is there a train of thought at all? So why don't you know what you're saying? You go on and on Oh forget it, man, I'm gone...

about

A completely random compendium of lost children - largely demos of tunes I thought I'd rerecord someday but it's seeming less and less likely I will before I die, so here you go. These tunes were written over the course of the past 21 years and recorded over the course of the past dozen. They're pretty rough, but I'm happy to get them out there and therefore out of my system so I can be less burdened and move on to other things. Plus maybe you like it raw and unpolished.

"Garbage Cannot" is my original demo for "Garbage Can't" which has in fact already been recorded by Research & Development but I find this version has its own charm and is worth public presentation.

Tracks 1,3,4,5,6,9,11,12,14 recorded on 4-track cassette hence the difficult mixes and mono drums
Tracks 2,7,8,10,13 recorded using a proper DAW on a computer that's 12 years old but still works just fine, dammit.
